The 35mm Camera is still the most useful all around purchase

The first couple of SLR 35mm cameras I ever owned were called Prakticas which were robust unsophisticated low budget cameras from Dresden in Eastern Germany. They had none of the fancy automated options that we find on the modern SLR 35mm camera, and despite being considered a poor man’s introduction into amateur photography, they were great cameras for learning about exposure control, depth of field and shutter speeds etc.

Who Uses the 35mm Camera?

For many years a 35mm camera has been the industry standard, and as such, probably the most useful all around purchase if you wish to get into photography.

This is because if you get a 35mm camera, you will be able to use a variety of standard attachments – more than with any other type of camera. In addition, 35mm film development is often cheaper than developing other films just because it is accepted everywhere. Although for certain application, such as the creation of very large prints, there are better choices than 35mm cameras, but in general it really is the best option for photographers of any level.

I got my first Praktica 35mm camera when I was 12 years old. I thought it was so cool, and there were so many ways that it could fuel my imagination. I'd sometimes pretend to be an ace reporter trying to get the inside scoop on the latest controversy. Other times, I'd sneak around with my 35mm camera, and pretend to be a private investigator, gathering evidence for my client. I felt invulnerable because I had the power to catch anything that happened on film.

When I got older, I really did do some reporting with my new 35mm SLR camera. It was amateur work done for Indy media. At the antiwar protests, I filmed people being arrested and beaten up by the cops. The images which I got were shocking and horrific. Cops were brutalizing unarmed peace demonstrators as the world reacted in an uproar to the unjust war in Iraq being perpetrated by the Bush administration. At the same time, it was moving to see the spirit and dedication of activists who would spend their every free moment fighting against tyranny worldwide. And I captured it all on my 35mm camera, and posted digital pictures for the world to see.

Photography really is a beautiful hobby and if you speak to any keen photographer, they will all tell you it has opened up the way in which they look at the world around them.

My 35mm camera has also come with me on travels all over the world. I used it to take pictures in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, capturing people from many different cultures going about their daily activities. It was a beautiful feeling to see people in different, exotic dress, working and playing the same way we do all around the world. I'd always get excited by the prospect of developing my 35mm camera film when I got back from a trip, and showing the pictures of the people I met to my friends back home.

Most of the modern day 35mm cameras are of great quality and if you stick with the brand names, you’ll be almost certain to get a great camera whether it’s an SLR (Single Lens Reflex) or a compact. I’ve listed below some of the popular brands of the day but they are many more to chose from. The makes below will give you some introductions to the modern cameras and may help you make a more informed decision when purchasing your next model.

Minolta 35mm cameras
Any Minolta 35mm camera is a pleasure to use, and the Minolta lenses are famous for their optical excellence. The Minolta 35mm SLR cameras have been popular with armatures and professional photographers for many years.

Canon 35mm cameras
It seems like the canon 35mm camera is as old as photography itself. Canon cameras are renowned for being of good overall quality and Canon digital cameras really do offer excellent value for money

The Nikon 35mm camera
My sister has owned 3 Nikon cameras and she said it is because she finds all Nikon cameras are very user friendly and come with awesome beginner features.

Olympus 35mm camera
Olympus cameras are known for sharp, vibrant images thanks to a number of advanced technologies with their current models. Having said that, they also get a few bad reviews from some users particularly with their compact types which some say can be a bit unreliable.
